Here is moar techno, on request. I put up Model 500 (and will expand on the Juan Atkins coverage in the future), but I figured another essential overview was in order: Derrick May, fellow techno God and Detroit pioneer. Same observations as before, with the additional note that May is more focused on some of the synth and melodic elements where Atkins is funky. This compilation has taken on a few different forms, and while I love the original artwork (I put this here, and put it on the RYM KiC list), I've put the expanded 2CD version up for download. These guys are so fond of using different names for different projects (going so far as wanting to make music to have a label of a specific name), so these overviews are the place to figure out how the early techno fit together.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to more Juan Atkins.
I've been a long time fan of the more recent 'minimal' things but have yet to dig back to the original detroit stuff.
I"m half way though 'strings of the strings of life' and its already floored me.
thanks so much!
I've listened to this the entire day and fully enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for pointing this out and making me addicted to Detroit Techno again (the last time was with Laurent Garnier, whom is French).
Hey man. Cheers for the efforts with your blog, looking forward to giving some of this old techno a listen. I added you as a friend on RYM (chetsky).
Thanks again.
Beautiful! I was working in a record store when this came out, and i rinsed it... Great collection. Thanks!
Thanks! Which version is this based on? It tracks the 5LP US version (http://www.discogs.com/Derrick-May-Innovator/release/13667) for the
first 3LPs, but then starts following cd2 of the US release (http://www.discogs.com/Derrick-May-Innovator/release/1132058) from track 05 onwards. I am quite puzzled :)
Nice
