Mixture of a few things. The drone/noise on this is exceptional, characterized by bright shoots through grainy noise. I like that each textural difference has its own behavior. Adding compositional character to texture is something not all artists in this vein can accomplish. Also, there are decent percussive parts on here, although I think those things do sound dated. While I normally don't care about that kind of thing, when it comes to this particular genre, even great albums, with these elements, are caught in the undertow of common sounds and generic copying. Thankfully, the majority of this album is really strong, and, as you can see from the comments, very likable.

Strange thing happened to me with this album, as a LP release (which was released first) it didn't catch me, but as a CD (released a bit later, in the january2006) it caught me easily,
especially Birds Fly By Flapping Their Wings.
I like the LP much better than the CD (contains some redundant stuff - LP is much more condensed). But despite the fact this album seems to have been a big "hit", I preferred the previous (autour de la lune) much better.
Microgravity, Polar Sequences, Substrata and Shenzou are (together with Autour de la lune) Biosphere's best ones.
