If the universe operated in accordance with my own personal whims and motives, then KiC would phase out this whole avant-classical thing it's gotten itself entrenched in and start posting really great jazz records again. I'm going to try to get the ball rolling with what in my eyes is at least a very good one. First Impressions made - at the risk of sounding like a complete ass - a truly great first impression. Shamek Farrah makes a kind of modal jazz, occassionally slipping into free territory, that at first glance reminded me a bit of the great Astigmatic. That comparison only really applies to the first and last tracks here however, as what falls in between is a bit more funky and soulful. The album starts off with something that may end up being added to my list of favorite jazz tunes ever, "Meteorologicly Inclined." If Madlib ever gets ahold of the track immediately following it, "Watch What Happens Now," some serious shit is gonna go down. The rest of the album doesn't quite live up to "Meteorologicly Inclined," but it is still a very solid listen. Hell, that opinion may even change fairly soon, as this record has been continuously growing on me since I first listened to it earlier in the week. First impressions are often correct, but time can make the heart grow fonder - or something like that... whatever.

HI Alex,
Months ago I mentioned that I would share some Cerberus Shoal with you and I hadn't followed up on that until now. This is a mix I made for a friend; there isn't as much unreleased material on here as I had thought but it's a good mix and it does have the 20 minute version of Ring which is quite nice. I hope you and others may enjoy it;

Anarchy in the KiC
more like panarchy
I'm all about the avant-classical-- there's plenty of jazz blogs to go around.
true, but i'd like to see a little more variation. maybe i'm just an asshole. this blog has gone through many phases, including noise, jazz, and eai. i think we could attract more visitors if we changed it up a bit. not that traffic is what life's all about, but you know...
I agree, more jazz, more noise, more everything can only do it good.
i agree that diversity is desirable, but i also don't want to be posting material that can easily be found elsewhere. so then i come back to startlingmoniker's point: jazz and noise blogs are somewhat dime-a-dozen. and yes, you can find just about any avant-classical album at avax, but who wants to deal with seven rapidshare links at a time?
and i am also biased toward what i both am currently listening to and albums about which i can say something meaningful. recently only composed music fulfills those two conditions. i've been moving back to folk music recently, so maybe i'll post some ish in that genre, but this could easily digress into posting danny 4.5 and 5 star albums...
I think the diversity should not come from the writers (they can only post on what they hear and like, plus, I chose them based on their taste - I can't ask them to change their taste, can I?), but from having more, diverse writers. When I contribute, it will add one dimension. If a couple people come through for me, they will add yet another. The point is, the people writing now are doing a fantastic job. I just need more people with a different point of view writing. It used to be Aaron, Danny, Emmy, Francesco, me, you, Grindfucked, etc. All these people are welcome to come back into the fold, but I wouldn't ask the current people to change one thing about what they're doing.
Paul
i see prince is back on the roster. hopefully that is a sign of more former contributers returning.
I'm not lobbying for jazz and noise specifically (especially not noise), just diversity. Post what moves you, of course. I hope we aren't taking that first sentence in my review too seriously. I think it speaks to the quality of this blog that I can attach memories to it, such as the music being posted last summer (which happens to have been a bit of jazz) and how it ran parallel to the events in my life at the time. Kudos to everybody.
top post. more jazz. more noise.
more.
thanks
If there are so many good Avant garde jazz blogs out there, then can some1 point me to some of them.
well if you're into the strata east stuff, strata-east.blogspot.com is the place to go, naturally.
most fun avant-jazz blog is probably inconstantsol.blogspot.com
